I can go ahead and give today's results for favorite non Jerry/Bobby/Pigpen song, because it is another landslide.

Box of Rain is the winner

I agree about the live versions. He had blown out his pipes by '72 or so. But--what a breathtaking performance on American Beauty.

and it would be great if phil could sing worth a damn...

Before people jump all over me, I was at Hampton and was jumping up and down like crazy when they "broke" it out. But if you listen to most versions thereafter, that included, while fun to hear, Phil will not be remembered for his vocal prowess.

THen again, I'm still trying to get into Here COmes Sunshine....

i'm kinda with ya on HCS - other than the beautiful jamming, the vocals were almost always tough to take (to my ears). just never worked for me.

The Box breakout was one of my all-time GD most memorable moments, but I actually agree about Phil's vocals- the guy really couldn't carry a tune very well.

Mixed feelings on HCSS- Not Hunter's best work lyrically, not the most melodic thing Jerry ever wrote, and the harmonies are sometimes so bad on that song it's laughable- but when they locked in the jam portion of the song was a monster.

Very surprised broken arrow doesn't take more of a beating among heads. Phil's vocals on that are tough.

I'm confining my Phil signing "bashing" to post-Hampton "revival". I'm sure there are one or two versions that could make me reconsider...
